About the contest

A communication house is looking for new, innovative ways to communicate the topic of "biodiversity".

How do we sensitize and involve people with different attitudes (supporters, indifferents, critics) about the importance of biodiversity as the central basis of life in our society?

Which partnerships with brands, companies, private individuals, interest groups could help us in this? And how could such partnerships work?

How do we involve the federal government, cantons and municipalities?

How do we get biodiversity supporters to multiply our message?

How can the concept and benefits of biodiversity be explained in a comprehensible way?

Task

We are looking for answers to the following questions...

How do we sensitize and involve people with different attitudes (supporters, indifferents, critics) about the importance of biodiversity as the central basis of life in our society?

Which partnerships with brands, companies, private individuals, interest groups could help us in this? And how could such partnerships work?

How do we involve the Confederation, cantons, and municipalities?

How do we get biodiversity supporters to multiply our message?

What new, surprising communication instruments could we use?

Background

Biodiversity includes the richness of species of animals, plants, fungi and micro-organisms, the genetic diversity within the different species, the diversity of habitats and the interactions within and between these levels.

Biodiversity is essential for human well-being. In addition to its economic importance, biodiversity also has intrinsic value and aesthetic and emotional values.

The communities of animals, plants, fungi and micro-organisms interacting as a functional unit with each other and with their inanimate environment (ecosystems) provide indispensable services of high economic, social and ecological value. These include, for example, the provision of drinking water, food for humans and animals and raw materials, the ability to adapt to climate change, protection against natural catastrophes, natural pest control, the provision of active substances for medicines or the importance of natural areas for physical and mental recovery and thus for human health.

These ecosystem services enable human existence and economic activities. A reduction in biodiversity therefore not only results in an irreversible loss of flora and fauna, but also poses risks to human well-being and the functioning of the economy.

The marked decline in biodiversity endangers Switzerland's welfare. Yet the Swiss population lacks knowledge about the diversity of species and their habitats. Moreover, the quality of the state of biodiversity in Switzerland is often overestimated. The aim is to close this perception gap in large sections of the population.
